What does it mean to be Anglican? Part I
September 14

In the first of a three-part series, The Rev. Titus Presler will lead a discussion on Anglican identity. He comes to us with 19 years of fulltime parish ministry; mission experience in India, Zimbabwe and urban USA; he was also president of the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, and is currently on sabbatical as Sub-dean for Academic Affairs at General Seminary. Prof. Presler's research interests focus on the interaction of gospel and culture, the formation of missionary identity, and current developments in the Anglican Communion. His publications highlight African Christianity, mission theology, and church mission policy. Engaged in the wider church, Dean Presler has been a member of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, is past chair of the Standing Commission on World Mission, and served five times as a deputy to General Convention.

What does it mean to be Anglican? Part II
September 21

For Part-Two of our series, “What Does it mean to be Anglican,” our discussion leader will be the Rev. Gregory Straub, the Executive Officer of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. General Convention meets every three years, and is the principal legislative body of the Episcopal Church. Prior to beginning his current responsibilities in 2004, Fr. Straub was Rector of Emmanuel Church in Chestertown, Maryland, for 28 years. He has also been an elected deputy to General Convention's triennial meetings in 2003, 2000, 1997, and 1985, and an alternate in 1994. At the 2003 meeting in Minneapolis he served the 840-member House of Deputies as Assistant Secretary for Voting. Fr. Straub will share with us his inside view of how the Episcopal Church has arrived at some of its recent decisions.

What does it mean to be Anglican? Part III
September 28

For Part-three of our series, “What does it mean to be Anglican,” the Rev. Jay Weldon, one of our new assistant clergy, will speak about his journey from the Baptist to the Episcopal Church. What was the drawing power of Anglicanism in this case? This will be an excellent opportunity to hear more of Jay’s story and come to know him better.

Sunday Evenings at Grace Church
Sunday evening classes run from 7:15–8:15pm in the Reception Room.

Faces of Anglicanism Part I
September 14

This past July Anglican bishops from around the world gathered in Canterbury, England for the once-per-decade Lambeth Conference. Their task, in the face of highly publicized schism, was to forge a new and deeper understanding of what it means to be a worldwide fellowship of Christians who are in communion with each other. Leading the conference was the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. Just who is the man at the helm of the Anglican Communion, and how did he fare through the Lambeth Conference? The Rev. Stephen Arbogast, Assisting Priest at Grace Church, and Chair of the Religion Department at Trinity School in Manhattan will lead the first of a three-part presentation entitled “Faces of Anglicanism.”

Faces of Anglicanism Part II
September 21

For Part-Two of our series, “Faces of Anglicanism,” Stephen Arbogast will turn our attention to the controversial Archbishop of Nigeria, Peter Akinola. Archbishop Akinola is the leader of the conservative, African Anglican movement that opposes the direction of the more liberal, Western churches in the Communion. Join us as Stephen Arbogast gives us a glimpse of African Anglicanism, and leads a discussion about whether we might all remain in one Communion.

Faces of Anglicanism Part III
September 28

For Part-three of our series, “Faces of Anglicanism,” Stephen Arbogast will focus on the recently installed Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, who faces the challenges of working with Christians in southern Africa, in general, and in leading Anglicans, in particular. Already under pressure to join the majority of African-Anglicans in questioning some of the English and American bishops, on one side, and pressure by more liberal elements in the Anglican Communion, on the other side, this relatively young archbishop's leadership is off to a promising start in what is likely to be service to the church for a generation to come. Join Stephen Arbogast in the final discussion about Anglicanism and Africa.

About Adult Education at Grace Church

Who
The Adult Education program is run by a six-person education committee that meets once a month during the program year (September - May).

How you can help
Since the size of our (currently attenuated) education budget depends on the overall financial health of the church, do consider making a pledge to Grace Church as you are able. For pledge cards, contact Bill Nave at the church office: bnave@gracechurchnyc.org. Please specify on your card that you are pledging partly thanks to the education program; your comment will help bolster our case for a bigger budget.
