Adult Education | Bible Classes | For Children and Youth | ![]() ADULT EDUCATION OFFERINGS Sunday Mornings at Grace Church Sunday morning classes run from 10 – 10:50am in the Reception Room (enter through 802 door and then take a left after the elevator). Which Gospel has the Camels? Part 1 December 7 The Birth Narratives in Matthew and Luke are significant because of the importance of Christmas in the life of the church and today in the life of the secular world as well. Shepherds, wise men, donkeys, innkeepers, barns, angels, and camels combine to become part of the “traditional tale” which we all love. In fact, however, Matthew and Luke tell two very different stories of Jesus’ birth, and some of the details that we all treasure are not to be found in either gospel. Join Helen Goodkin, former Director of the Master’s Program and Lay Education at General Theological Seminary, as we read these stories together to discern the meaning of Jesus’ birth for these two evangelists and for ourselves in the 21st century. Which Gospel has the Camels? Part 2 December 14 We continue our discussion with Helen Goodkin. 200 Years of Grace Church Images and Documents with the Grace Church Archives December 21 Join us for an open house of the new home for the Grace Church archives. On this, the 200th anniversary of the consecration of the original Grace Church, join us in the new archives room off Tuttle Hall to view early images and documents of Grace Church and old New York. Sunday Evenings at Grace Church Sunday evening classes run from 7:15–8:15pm in the Reception Room. Religulous December 7 Religulous is the name of a current movie that attempts to paint all people of faith with one unflattering brush. What is the secular world thinking of us, and how should we respond? Those interested in addressing these questions are encouraged to see the film and come to the Reception Room at 7:15 p.m. for a discussion led by the Rev. Jay Weldon. What Does it mean to be Episcopal? December 14 We live in a time when simply being “spiritual but not religious” suffices for many people. Why bother adding the label “Christian,” to say nothing of “Episcopal” to yourself. Does it help? The Rev. Benjamin Thomas leads a discussion about Episcopal identity and practice. Bring your questions. Wednesday Evening Bible Study Every Wednesday at 7pm The Wednesday Evening Bible Study meets weekly using the Lectio method of Biblical study Women's Bible Study Every Wednesday, 10:30-11:30am. Join in this historic, weekly gathering of women with divergent beliefs, interests, ages, and previous levels of study of the Bible. We study the history, context, and intricacies of the upcoming Sunday text based on the Lectionary, a three-year cycle of Sunday readings from the Old and New Testaments. Connections to our day-to-day efforts to lead spiritually sound and interesting lives are encouraged. Meets in the Reception Room. Led by the Rev. Linda Bartholomew. Other Information Registration No advanced registration is required for our courses, nor do you need to be able to attend every class. Just show up when you can. Also, all classes are open to anyone at no cost, though some financial support to the church is recommended, if you're able. About Adult Education at Grace Church Who The Adult Education program is run by a six-person education committee that meets once a month during the program year (September - May). How you can help Since the size of our (currently attenuated) education budget depends on the overall financial health of the church, do consider making a pledge to Grace Church as you are able. For pledge cards, contact Bill Nave at the church office: bnave@gracechurchnyc.org. Please specify on your card that you are pledging partly thanks to the education program; your comment will help bolster our case for a bigger budget.
BIBLE CLASSES A Bible Study for men and women meets Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. in the Reception Room. Bagels and coffee are available. Women's Bible Study meets every Wednesday at 10:30am.
