Grace Church in New York

The Weekly Epistle

Dear Friends,

It is Friday morning as I type these words. Of course, the main thing on our minds and in the headlines is the presidential election. I think it’s safe to say that most everyone – whether your political flag is blue or red – was hoping for a decisive result on Tuesday evening so that the country could move ahead in one direction or another. Alas, the race has turned out to be a nail-biter, perhaps the closest in our nation’s history. It could be that a clear winner will emerge by the end of today and the loser will concede. Perhaps not.

Where we will be by Sunday morning is anyone’s guess right now. But you’ll want to make a point of tuning in to the Sunday Forum when two Grace Church parishioners who are extraordinarily well-placed to comment on these times will be our presenters. John Avlon is a Senior Political Analyst and anchor at CNN. John is married to Margaret Hoover, who is the host of PBS Firing Line. In the past year Margaret has interviewed a fascinating array of presidential candidates, governors, and other newsworthy people like Dr. Anthony Fauci. Sparks fly in a wonderful and informative way when John and Margaret play off each other. On Sunday they will let the Spirit move them in reflecting on where we are, how we got here, and what might lie ahead in the weeks to come. It will also be the day after their 11th wedding anniversary! Note the new starting time of 10 am for the Sunday Forum. You can join the Zoom link by clicking here.

Speaking of clicking, do take some time to visit the Grace Parish Showcase. The show went live last Monday, and features the artistic talents of numerous Grace Church parishioners. It’s been really fun to see the artwork, hear the music, and watch the videos that are on display. The creative Spirit of the Lord was hardly idle in our people during the quarantine. Many thanks to those who submitted entries, and to the GCW (Grace Church Woman) for sponsoring the show. We live in crazy times, but I find enormous joy in the Grace Church family. Join in on Sunday, either in-person or on the livestream.

The Rev. J. Donald Waring
