Making All Things New 2026

The Rectory
of Grace Church
is an irreplaceable cornerstone of our common life. It is essential to the way we go about being a local parish. This building, designed by James Renwick, Jr., and opened just a year after the church, has been home to all of our rectors and their families since 1847. It is the location of the rector’s office, and the site of numerous parish dinners and receptions throughout the year. Its guest room houses visiting clergy and dignitaries who come to enrich our spirits. Many congregations today have either sold or repurposed their rectories, and regret it. They now bear the burden of securing off-site market rate housing, while we remain blessed with a purpose-built home at the heart of our campus. The rectory ensures stability, continuity, and daily pastoral presence. Grace Church could not function as it does without an on-site rector.
We have already raised
more than 80% of the funds needed to restore and safeguard the exterior of this extraordinary asset. Now our challenge is to close the remaining gap, so that decades of deferred maintenance do not erode what generations before us built with foresight.

The Roof
The roof of the rectory has been failing for decades, and the many short-term fixes attempted to stave off a full restoration (such as tarps over skylights and spot fixes with tar) are no longer keeping the water out.
The Beams
Wood rot is setting in on the building’s support beams, threatening the structural integrity of the building and posing much more expensive repairs down the road if not addressed now.
The Windows
The original 1847 timber frame gothic windows of the rectory are character-defining elements of this landmark building. Caked under a century of lead-based paint and asbestos, and now badly flaking, they are in urgent need of restoration before they become unsalvageable.
