Grace Church in New York

Liturgical Changes for Lent – Our Sunday worship takes on a different tone for these next five weeks of Lent. We will begin each service with a Penitential Order, which includes a recitation of the 10-Commandments. The word “Alleluia” is omitted from all hymns, versicles, and responses, and you will see no flowers on the altar.  The goal of the scarcity is to highlight the abundant life that will be ours to claim at Easter.

March 29 – 20s/30s Lenten Sushi Fridays at Grace –  Grace will host at 6:30 pm on Friday, March 29, with a tour of the church (perfect opportunity to invite a friend!), sushi, salad, and the brief but beautiful service of Compline (Night Prayer). Please email the Rev. Chase Danford to RSVP.

Other Sushi Friday dates – March 8 at St. Ignatius of Antioch (UWS), March 15 at St. John’s in the Village, March 22 at Trinity Wall Street, April 5 at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, and April 12 at House of the Redeemer.  Please email the Rev. Mary Cat Young, Diocesan Young Adult Missioner, to RSVP to these dates.

March 12-April 9 – Lenten Noon-time Lectio Divina – On Tuesdays during Lent, March 12-April 9, come experience lectio divina (“holy reading”), a way of praying with scripture with roots in the early church and later formalized by Benedictine monastic communities. Lectio is not Bible study and does not aim to analyze scripture; rather, the goal is prayerful contemplation of the Word of God. We will meet on Tuesdays from 12:10-12:50 in the Reception Room (please do not arrive later than 12:15). For more information, email the Rev. Chase Danford.

March 6  Lenten E-Devotional – Thinking about a Lenten spiritual discipline? Consider taking two minutes out of every day to prayerfully pause and read a reflection written by members of the Grace Church community for one another and delivered daily (Mon-Sat) to your e-mail inbox. These devotions begin on Ash Wednesday, March 6, so sign up today by emailing Mr. Duy Nguyen.

Mar 23 – ECW Quiet Day – All are welcome to a Lenten Quiet Day sponsored by Grace Church ECW. The Rev. Posey Krakowsky will present a workshop on The Contemplative Gaze, using the artwork in our own church for meditation, reflection, and prayer. 10-1:30 in the Reception Room and the Church. Coffee and Breakfast will be served, bring your own bag lunch. RSVP to the Rev. Julia Offinger
